#17 Web 2.0 Summary

Some thoughts on the Web 2.0 Tutorial:

• will not use Twitter
• will probably not use Facebook
• have used and will continue to use Flickr
• will set up a bookmarking page @ iKeepBookmarks.com
• Suffolk Wave - probably won't use
• RSS feeds - will use, probably weekly
• Google Docs - will probably use occasionally
• Wiki - will revisit and use the Princeton Public Library Book Lobers Wiki
• my blog - I'm not sure how much I'll use this
• YouTube - will use occasionally
• Craigslist - have already purchased and sold items on Craigslist

Even though I was off to a slow and slightly negative start, I greatly appreciate the opportunity to participate in this tutorial and to explore various Web 2.0 tools. I've learned a great deal and will utilize much of what I've discovered. Thank you to my library colleagues for the time and expertise put forth to present this program.

#16 Craigslist

I read the Craigslist Fact Sheet and Personal Safety Tips. Interesting to see a picture of the Victorian House in San Francisco where the 28 Craigslist employees work. I pictured that it would be a much bigger corporate office space.

Viewed several postings throughout the morning in between patrons. This is the link to something I found in Riverhead in the Long Island/Farm & Garden listings. I'd love to have this in my backyard, tucked in the woods beside my house.

#15 GOOGLE DOCS

I created a new document and sent a collaborative invitation to Nick. This seems relatively easy, and I plan to revisit some of the templates for additional uses. There are clearly some great advantages to using Googles Docs.

#14 - What Is A Wiki?

Some thoughts:

• PALS Wiki - some helpful "Keyboard Shortcuts for the OPAC"
• SJCPL Subject Guides - good, will use
• Book Lovers Wiki - some interesting reviews, also some poorly written reviews, added several titles from here to my "TO READ" list
• Library Success - some good "teaching information literacy" ideas

13 Finding New Feeds

I added two new feeds to my Google Reader account, using Technorati, which was easy. I also explored Syndic8.com which for me was not as user-friendly. Also, searched for new feeds on Google Reader. This was also easy. I also checked out the Google Reader help page. I'm going to check Wikipedia for an explanation of XML or ATOM?

#12 Discovering Feeds

I browsed the library website for feeds - finding CNN.com, Wall Street Journal, Movie Reviews, ESPN Sports News, Snopes Urban Legends, and New York Times Book Review. Also found several additional feeds listed under local. Who decides which feeds will be featured? Also, I read many of the Library RSS feeds and, of course, subscribed to the "Kids - New Books" feed. This will help me stay on top of the new arrivals since I don't always get to browse the new book shelf.

I created a Google Reader account and subscribed to the following health related sites:

• Web MD
• New England Journal of Medicine
• World's Healthiest Foods

Suffolk Wave

Interesting to see available titles. Checked out and tried downloading the Ameila Bedelia Audio Collection but the correct software is apparently not on this Reference Desk computer. So this item is checked out to me, but I cannot access it. Any suggestions?

My comment on the tag cloud for the James Patterson book:
I prefer traditional subject headings.
The tag cloud is redundant.
(eg. murder, murder mystery, mystery, mystery fiction, general fiction)

#5 Myspace & Facebook

I viewed the library on Facebook, MySpace, and MySpace Teen.

I explored some of the other libraries on the Facebook connection. I chose not to Fan the Facebook page.

On MySpace and MySpace Teen, I felt like on was intruding on the privacy of people that I do not know, reading things that I do not need/want to know. I don't really enjoy reading comments about people putting bullets in other people's mouths.

It seems that these are designed to be used by individuals, not organizations. After all, MMS Community Library cannot be single or have a zodiac sign.
